The film is probably good but it's a huge dissapointment for the Steinbeck reader. And don't get me wrong, I like Ford very much. To me, this version is only memorable for Gregg Toland's sublime cinematography(which was directed masterfullly by Ford).

the first time I saw, I thought it was so-so, a minor Ford. Watching it again, during my recent "self-inflicted" Ford DVD retrospective, I realized it was a huge masterpiece. I actually wrote to Tag Gallagher that "if Ford had not made any other films, it would be on my best ten films of all times list." It's cinematography that makes sense, and very Fordian too.

Never read the Steinbeck book.
