I can never decide with Hou, but "Millennium Mambo" may be my favorite of his films, even given "Three Times", or the pair of commissioned films "Cafe Lumiere" and "The Flight of the Red Balloon".
I saw "Three Times" once on 35mm, its impact was so strong (it was my first Hou) I can't forget that.
Even if I change my mind that it is the best, I'll never forget that first encounter with his super-human consciousness...
On the other hand, due to the complexity of the visual rhyming between vignettes, I still judge "Three Times" his richest work. I also think "A Time for Freedom" is simply perfect in its own right.
